Baking Powder Biscuits

The easy path to biscuits: cut in shortening, stir, and drop by the spoonful. You could roll and cut, but that is more mess for a weeknight tray.

Yield One sheet of drop biscuits
Time ~20 minutes
Difficulty Easy

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup shortening
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 450°F.
  2. Cut shortening into flour.
  3. Mix in the remaining ingredients.
  4. Drop dough by heaping tablespoon onto a greased cookie sheet, about 1 inch apart.
  5. Bake 10–12 minutes until golden brown.

Notes

Rolling on a floured board and cutting rounds is optional. Drop biscuits are intentional here — less cleanup, still good biscuits.
